Did you know that we draw fractals with our eyes closed?

Closing your eyes while creating the initial line changes the experience, because with your eyes open, it is easy to plan, correct and arrange the line as you go. With your eyes closed, that visual control is temporarily unavailable, so you follow the instructions without seeing exactly what is taking shape on the paper.

The line is still made within a clear framework, so the exercise is not simply random scribbling. The method combines guidance with a small degree of uncertainty - you remain responsible for the movement, but you cannot fully control the visible result.

This does not mean switching off your conscious mind. You may notice how tightly you hold the pen, whether your movements feel hesitant or confident, or how strongly you want to open your eyes and check the page.

When you open your eyes, the network of spaces may feel unexpected. In Fractal Drawing, no single curve or crossing is given a fixed meaning, the drawing is considered as a whole, alongside the experience of making it.

Self-observation can therefore begin before any colour is added, not because the line provides a diagnosis, but because the process gives you something concrete to notice and reflect on.
